It is with great sadness we share the news of the death of a Children’s Center family member, Tammy Warren. Tammy was one of our teachers for Head Start-and not new to Head Start at all. Tammy had been involved in Head Start for 23 years. We were proud to call her one of ours for the start up of our programs. She was teaching a class in our Suffolk Head Start Center on 860 Davis Blvd. and was scheduled to eventually move to the Head Start Center in Courtland when that building re-opened.
She was lovingly known as “Mama Warren” to the Courtland staff. Those who knew her best say her top three loves were her faith, her family, and the children she taught. She had a knack for bringing out the best in those around her. Her infectious laugh brought joy to many. Excitingly, she was not finished with growing and learning. She was on her way to a B.S. in early childhood. Tammy lit a fire beneath her fellow teachers to do the right thing and to use all the toys and equipment available to give children every advantage.
Tammy was 48. She is survived by her mother, Mary Warren, two sisters, a brother, and her beloved nieces and nephews. A devoted member of Tabernacle Praise, she was a leader and faithful servant. Her faith was evident to any who knew her.
Not only does our love go out to her family-it also encircles our staff members who have known Tammy as a friend, a God-sister, and a fellow child advocate for years. Whether an old friend or a new friend, we celebrate that our paths, the paths of our children and their families, and our communities have been touched by her life.
